Hopi Prophecy

The Hopi Prophecy is one of the most well-known Indigenous prophetic traditions in North America. It comes from the Hopi people—one of the oldest living cultures in the American Southwest—whose teachings, symbols, and prophecies have been passed down orally for generations.

Here’s an overview of key elements and meanings within the Hopi Prophecy:

Origins and Purpose

The Hopi see themselves as the caretakers of the Earth, placed here to maintain balance between humanity, nature, and the spiritual world. Their prophecies are not meant to frighten but to guide humanity toward harmony and survival through changing ages, or “worlds.”

The Four Worlds

The Hopi believe that humanity has passed through several worlds (or ages):

  1. First World (Tokpela) – Destroyed by fire (volcanoes or global heat) due to human corruption.

  2. Second World (Tokpa) – Destroyed by ice (glacial age) after moral decline.

  3. Third World (Kuskurza) – Destroyed by a great flood (similar to other global flood myths).

  4. Fourth World (Tuwaqachi) – The current age. We were warned to live in balance or risk the same fate.

According to prophecy, we are nearing the end of the Fourth World, and a transition to the Fifth World may be near.

Signs of the End of the Fourth World

Elders describe a series of Nine Signs that would mark the approach of great change. Among them:

  1. The coming of white-skinned people who take land and resources.

  2. Land filled with iron horses (trains).

  3. Land crossed by giant cobwebs (telegraph, power, or internet lines).

  4. Land crossed by rivers of stone (roads, highways).

  5. Pictures in the sky (planes, satellites).

  6. The sea turning black and killing life (oil spills).

  7. Many people living in the sky (space stations).

  8. Falling stars appearing (rockets, missiles).

  9. The return of the Blue Star Kachina, a spirit signifying purification and the dawn of the Fifth World.

The Blue Star (Saquasohuh) Prophecy

One of the most famous prophecies says that:

“When the Blue Star Kachina makes its appearance in the heavens, the Fifth World will emerge.”

Interpretations vary—some link this to celestial events, others to a spiritual awakening or collective purification.

The Hopi Message to Humanity

At the heart of all Hopi prophecy is a moral teaching:

“If we dig precious things from the land, we will invite disaster.”

Their message emphasizes:

  • Respect for Mother Earth

  • Living simply and spiritually

  • Unity among peoples

  • Return to sacred balance
